MDIF has launched and is now receiving proposals for Amplify Kenya, an innovation and capacity building program for independent media in Kenya.

The program is aimed at assisting Kenya based independent media through capacity building, leadership-focused development, and network building within the broader East Africa media landscape.

We are seeking proposals from media organisations that are building innovative news and information products that:

  • Explore opportunities to reach and connect with broader audiences through digital platforms and technologies
  • Develop new revenue generation opportunities or sustainable business models

Benefits for selected media

Successful applicants will benefit from access to a range of capacity building activities, one-on-one coaching, opportunities to learn from experts, workshops, and bespoke training aimed at helping participating organizations develop the skills and resources needed to explore innovative revenue models, expand audience engagement and foster long-term sustainability. They will also gain access to a collaborative and supportive community of like-minded organisations in the Amplify Kenya Program and other MDIF Amplify programs globally.

Potential results for participant media:

  • Innovation and adaptation: Mentorship and resources to experiment with new technologies, revenue models, and audience engagement strategies.
  • Enhanced resilience: Access to expertise and support for weathering transitions, financial challenges, and fostering long-term sustainability.
  • Collaborative learning: A supportive cohort environment promoting peer learning, knowledge sharing, and best practice exchange.
  • Increased reach and impact: Tools and resources to expand audience reach and deliver higher-quality news and information.

Criteria – Who are we looking for?

Amplify Kenya will be open to innovative early-stage new actors, digital-first outlets as well as more mature media companies pivoting to a new revenue model or adding a new revenue line. The focus of the program will be on media with a product and business mindset and growth potential. Selected media will need to be:

  • Participants looking to seed viable new ventures, expand existing ventures, drive innovative initiatives, and promote adaptation and experimentation in content creation, distribution, and engagement.
  • A registered independent media company (read how we define independent here) or a new venture with strong evidence of viability.
  • Mission-driven businesses that are passionate about trying new approaches to local news and information.
  • Organisations with unique (non-traditional) approaches to information services, who are developing unique strategies to reach and serve their needs.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all places on the program are filled. Click here to apply.
