Now is the right time, more than ever, for impact investors to invest in independent media. Given the precarious state of press freedom in many parts of the world, philanthropies and impact funds have the opportunity to step up and support independent media, which plays an important role in reaching the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
In conversation with Impact Investor, MDIF CEO Harlan Mandel argues that looking at independent media only from the prism of fulfilling SDG16, which addresses peace, justice and strong institutions, “is too restrictive”.
MDIF, he says, believes that “it’s really important to understand that independent media really supports and advances all of the SDGs across the board”.
Talking about the relatively unseen impacts of independent journalism on societies, he mentions the role it can play in reducing corruption, crime and, citing the findings of Nobel Prize winning Indian Economist Amartya Sen, even avoid large-scale human catastrophes like famines.
