Four our of our clients and media partners, Daily Maverick, The Republic, Scroll.in and Sowt, have been awarded an AI innovation grant through the JournalismAI Innovation Challenge to help them “experiment, implement and share best practices of AI technologies”.
Propelled by project JournalismAI, an initiative by the London School of Economics, and supported by the Google News Initiative, grants were awarded to a select 35 media organizations from 22 countries. The successful applicants were chosen from a total of 700+ applicants after rigorous assessment on factors such as novelty, feasibility and potential for impact.
Our clients and partners pitched a range of AI projects, including developing a versioning platform to repurpose news articles into different information formats (Scroll), an AI voice converter tool to help newsrooms translate their content into indigenous African languages (The Republic), a tool to boost subscription growth by analysing customer behaviour (Sowt) and an AI model designed to increase reader revenue conversion (Daily Maverick).
The grants provide a great opportunity for our clients and partners to accelerate their ongoing experiments with AI and to better understand and share with the world how this disruptive technology can benefit journalism.
Congratulations to all the applicants who made the cut.
