Flora Silva, financial manager of the Guatemalan newspaper El Periódico, was arrested on August 19 after a raid on her home. Later that day, Silva was transferred to a local hospital due to a medical condition and remains in custody there.
The arrest is a continuation of the efforts to silence and intimidate El Periódico, whose founder and president José Ruben Zamora has been detained since July 29 on money laundering and related charges.
El Periódico denounces the case against the newspaper as retaliation for its reporting on alleged corruption involving President Alejandro Giammattei and Attorney General Consuelo Porras.
Silva’s and Zamora’s arrests drew international condemnation and widespread calls for their immediate release from prison.
